Transformation to Strengthen Economics and Business Education Roles

Universities develop and change throughout the ages and human civilization. Since the first predecessors of the university appeared in ancient Greece until then these academies influenced the form of higher education in Europe. The demands of the business world as well as advances in science have made the demand for higher education also rises significantly. Therefore, in addition to the increasing growth of private universities, the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) also launched the Merdeka Learn Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy. MKBM is a policy innovation to transform the higher education system in Indonesia to produce more relevant graduates. This was conveyed by the Postgraduate Director of the Jakarta State University (UNJ) Prof. Dr. Dedi Purwana E.S., M.Bus. in the Scientific Oration for the 12th Anniversary of the Faculty of Economics and Business, YSU, last Thursday (22/6).

One of the pillars of this policy, namely Higher Education with Legal Entities (PTN-BH) is now also implemented and experienced by UNY. Dedi continued, the PTN-BH transformation was not merely changing clothes. “Stakeholders' demands are certainly getting higher and more diverse. If what is being done is still the same as before, of course, stakeholders will be disappointed," he said.

Dedi offers several ideas to keep the implementation of economics and business education following the path of university-level transformation. "There are several strategies, including the clarity of direction of the study program's development, curriculum restructuring, developing and enriching learning content, increasing partnerships with the business world and industry, improving the quality of critical and complex thinking skills, changing teaching and learning methods, and creating entrepreneurial university,” explained Dedi.

In his report, the Dean of FEB UNY Dr. Siswanto, M.Pd. stated that FEB is still developing and getting important achievements. “This year, the five undergraduate study programs at FEB have been internationally accredited by FIBAA without any compliance issues. In addition, FEB has also opened Masters in Management, Masters in Accounting, and Doctoral Programs in Economics and Business Education," he explained.

UNY Rector Prof. Sumaryanto, M. Kes. advised that FEB UNY would continue to move forward and develop. "The opening of a new study program indicates an increase in the quality and quantity of human resources at FEB. Let's maintain our cohesiveness and integrity," he said. The 12th Anniversary ceremony was attended by all education staff, lecturers, and student representatives as well as the Faculty Academic Senate. In addition, the event was opened and closed by the Chairperson of the Faculty Academic Senate Abdullah Taman, M.Sc., Ak. This was also attended by the Chancellor, all UNY Leadership Meetings, and invited guests. (fdhl)
